You've had your new hardwood floor installed. Now you want to make sure you keep it in good condition. Since you've never had a wood floor before, you're not quite sure how to do that. Before you get stressed, you should know that caring for your wood floor isn't as difficult as you might think. In fact, with a just a couple steps, your floor can look brand new for many years.

Cleaning Your Floor

When you have a wood floor, it's important to keep all the dirt and dust off of it. Ground-in dirt can destroy the shine of your floor. It's a good idea to vacuum your floor several times a week. Be sure to get along the baseboards to remove dirt that might be hiding there. Once you've vacuumed the floor, you'll want to mop it to restore the shine. You don't need a commercial cleaning product to keep your wood floors clean and shiny.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Clean mop
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Castile soap

  1. Fill your bucket with 1 gallon of warm water.
  2. Add ¼ cup each of vinegar and castile soap.
  3. Begin mopping in the corner farthest away from the exit – this will prevent you from having to walk over your freshly mopped floor to leave the room.
  4. Mop the entire room and allow it to air dry.

Polishing Your Floor

When your floor begins to look a bit dull, you'll need to apply a fresh coat of wood polish. It's not as difficult as it sounds.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Hardwood floor paste
  • Soft cloth – such as cheesecloth
  • Buffing machine – available for rent at most home improvement centers

  1. Clean the floor as described in the cleaning section above.
  2. Beginning in the corner farthest away from the door, begin apply the wax to your floor.
  3. Be sure to use a circular motion to ensure an even coverage.
  4. Once the entire floor is covered with wax, use your buffing machine to polish your wood floor.
  5. Repeat this process at least once a year to keep your floor looking beautiful.

Wood floors are a beautiful addition to any home. If you have a new wood floor, you want to take care of it. The instructions provided above will help you protect your floor so that it will last for many years. About Me
Transforming Your Existing Furniture

When I bought my first place, I realized that I really wanted to make it my own. Unfortunately, since I didn't have thousands of dollars to spend on furniture, I didn't think that I could afford to beautify the space. Instead of creating a dramatic and beautiful display, I simply settled for what I already had, which made my home boring. However, a friend of mine explained that I could turn things around by transforming my existing furniture. I started refinishing tables, painting furniture, and creating my own artwork. My blog is all about helping you to transform your existing home into something more exciting.
